People that make good Database specialists tend to be incredibly orderly, scientific and logical. They're able to work well independently, or as one of a small team, & show remarkable consideration for details. The work often will involve reporting to senior management, & so self-assured communication skills will be needed. Working with business Databases can be quite a responsible position - and safety and security is continually getting to be a larger concern in this area. An excellent degree of personal ethics & professional dependability will be called for - and in some organisations you could need some form of security clearance. People from accounting and business jobs can make first class 'DBAs', and in many instances the position is a stepping-stone to a rather more advanced placement in the company hierarchy.

Throughout the world, the most common Database Systems are 'Oracle' & Microsoft SQL-Server. Oracle is an older system which is still used on large-scale installations, although 'SQL' Server is much more common now in regular business environments; SQL has become the de-facto norm for databases on the web. MS has incorporated 'SQL' Server technology in to all the MS platforms and programming languages - which makes it an obvious option over 'Oracle' as far as Database training is concerned. The older Database program Microsoft Certified Database Administrator ('MCDBA') has recently been superceded with the Microsoft Certified IT Professional ('MCITP') and the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS). The MCITP DBA accreditation incorporates the MS SQL Server 2005 version, because this isstill the most popular edition in industry and commerce. The later SQL Server 08 remains in its early days. In order to get the complete 'MCITP' certification, a number of MCTS modules need to be completed first.

Typically, a new trainee will not know to ask about a painfully important area - the way their training provider breaks up the courseware elements, and into what particular chunks. Training companies will normally offer a program typically taking 1-3 years, and send out each piece as you finish each section. This sounds reasonable until you consider the following: It's not unusual for trainees to realise that their training company's 'standard' path of training isn't the easiest way for them. Sometimes, it's more expedient to use an alternative order of study. Perhaps you don't make it inside of the expected timescales?

To be honest, the perfect answer is to get an idea of what they recommend as an ideal study order, but get everything up-front. You're then in possession of everything if you don't manage to finish quite as quick as they'd want.
